Solar Apprenticeships Available in SW Virginia

This summer sixteen local students will have the opportunity to help build solar arrays on 11 schools in Lee and Wise County through an apprenticeship program offered by Secure Futures.

While actively contributing to project construction, students will also be gaining valuable OSHA 10 and SHINE certificates, earning more than $5,440, and gaining free credit hours toward an electrical program at Mountain Empire Community College. The apprenticeship program will occur over 8-weeks in June and July with students contributing 40 hours each week.

Students will be paid a competitive hourly rate of $17. In addition to on-the-job training, students will also receive seven days of in-classroom training at Mountain Empire Community College between May 18^th and May 31^st.

The apprenticeship program is made possible by a partnership between Secure Futures, Mountain Empire Community College, Wise County Career-Technical Center, and Lee County Career and Technical Center. The program is a part of Secure Futures broader effort in the region to support sustainable solar workforce development and deployment.
