The system at EMU has generated more than 100,000 kilowatt hours of power since it went live in November 2010. Click on image to enlarge.

This week, Virginia’s largest solar photovoltaic system, at 104 kW, located at Eastern Mennonite University in Harrisonburg, Virginia just reached the point of producing 100,000 kilowatt hours worth of electricity.

That’s the equivalent of 40 tons of carbon reduction.

In addition, EMU’s solar panels have saved 83,649 pounds of CO2 from entering the atmosphere, and the equivalent of 60 barrels of oil since the installation of the solar panels in November 2010.

For coffee drinkers, that’s enough power to brew more than two million cups of Joe! Cumulatively, for the calendar year so far, the system has produced about ten percent more power than originally projected.

EMU is a leader among faith-based universities offering undergraduate, graduate and seminary programs that emphasize peace building, cross-cultural understanding, sustainability and service to others.
