Deadline Coming Up to Get Federal Solar Tax Credit

Schools, colleges, hospitals, local governments, and businesses that have been “thinking about” going solar might want to accelerate their thinking to save up to 60% by acting in time to qualify for the Federal Tax Credit on commercial-scale solar projects.
While tax credits expired at the end of 2025 for homeowners, solar tax credits remain available in 2026 under Section 48E of the Internal Revenue Code for businesses and institutions. Even non-profits that pay no federal taxes can receive the value of the tax credit either as a direct payout or through a lower rate on a power purchase agreement with a solar developer like Secure Solar Futures.
The base tax credit chops 30% off the cost of a solar project. Then, adding benefits for solar panels made in the USA and other factors, total incentives could take more than half the cost off of a solar project
But only solar projects that get in by either one of two deadlines can qualify:
- Solar projects “placed in service,” fully built and operational, by December 31, 2027 (Risky! See below)
- Solar projects “safe harbored” by this coming July 4, 2026, giving them until 2030 to be completed
While those considering solar may be tempted to wait until later this year or even into next to decide, they risk losing the tax credit altogether if their solar project isn’t completely done by the end of next year. And with unusually long waiting times for both labor and equipment, the odds are low of getting a commercial-scale solar energy system contracted, planned, built, installed, tested, inspected, permitted, and turned on in 18 months or less.
And if you miss the deadline by even a single day, then you’re totally out of luck. Your project will not qualify for any of the tax credit.
A safer route would be to engage a solar developer now and sign a contract during June to qualify for the safe harbor protection. That will give your solar company enough time to order the minimum amount of equipment by July 4 needed to qualify for the IRS’s definition of “beginning of construction.” Getting in under the safe harbor deadline provides a full four years to complete the solar project, a very reasonable timeline even in today’s constrained market.
Secure Solar Futures recommends signing a contract by June 30 to be safe.
In other areas of life, good things may come to those who wait. But for schools, hospitals, and businesses who want to go solar, it’s going to be a lot cheaper if they can grab the Federal Solar Tax Credit while it’s still available.
The good news is that some solar developers have prepared for this very moment, and are ready to move quickly if their customers are.
